Yesterday Toyota released some more information about the latest warranty extension for owners with the 2.4L 2AZ that can burn oil. The program is still reimbursement only and you can read more about what the recall all means in this post from a few weeks back.
In a reference memo posted to dealers and subscribers to their Techinfo site (which CARspec pays to access), they clarified the procedure if you have a damaged engine you believe is the result of oil consumption. If:
- You are in the applicable VIN range for the warranty
- Low oil is the cause the engine damage
- You do not have external oil leaks that caused the loss of oil
Toyota will attempt to repair the damage and start an oil consumption test to see if you meet their excessive consumption criteria. If your engine fails the consumption test, Toyota will pay for the first repair to start the consumption test and the repair for the oil consumption as well.
If:
- You are in the applicable VIN range for the warranty
- Low oil is the cause of the engine damage
- You DO have external oil leaks that caused the loss of oil
You are not eligible for the ZE7 warranty and you will pay for the repairs.
In rare circumstances, if:
- You are in the applicable VIN range for the warranty
- Low oil is the cause of the engine damage
- You do not have external oil leaks that caused the loss of oil
- Toyota repairs the damage, starts an oil consumption test and it passes (ie. you’re not burning enough oil)
You would be responsible for the cost of repairs for the engine damage AND not eligible for the warranty claim. If you think you’re headed down this road make sure your service adviser gives you the heads up you may be on the hook for the total bill. They truly want to fix your car for you under the warranty but are bound by Toyota’s guidelines.
Lastly, if you run out of oil, have engine damage and cannot prove you’ve been changing your oil you aren’t eligible for the ZE7 warranty.
As Eden Prairie and Chanhassen’s Toyota and Lexus specialist repair shop, we wish all owners with oil burning 2AZ engines the best of luck getting their engines replaced under this upcoming warranty. If your warranty has been denied, give us a call for an independent estimate!
Bought a 2009 scion from car max with 43000 miles on it Had the car for 6 months engine locked up . I had to repair with a junk yard engine as I did not have the money FOR NEW ENGINE . Received from Toyota the oil consumption NOTICE and contacted the reimbursement team . they told me they would make things wright and after all the back and forth receipts invoices for new engine aaa tow receipts mechanics letter of engine failure , now they say that they must have serial numbers of old engine parts for there tax purposes . so I have been screwed .BEWARE OF TOYOTA REPS AND CUSTOMER SEVICE THEY FLAT OUT LIE …
James,
I’m sorry you had a bad experience at the dealership. I’d recommend talking to the scrap yard you purchased the used engine from to see if you can find your old engine/any serial numbers. In any case good luck!
John
DUDE ARE YOU KIDDING YOU WORK FOR TOYOTA .DID YOUREALLY THINK I SHOULD TRY AND FIND SERIAL NUMBERS FROM THE OLD ENGINE THATS GONE TO JUNKYARD .STUPID RESPONSE
James,
While every employee at CARspec worked in come capacity for Toyota (at a Toyota or Lexus dealership), we are no longer connected to Toyota proper – only an independent Toyota shop. I was trying to offer an alternative to help you get your claim honored by Toyota, in no way did I mean to offend. Keep up talking to Toyota – sometimes they can surprise a customer and cooler heads prevail in a situation like this.
Good luck!
John
