We’ve written our fair share about coolant leaks from all sorts of places and today is no different. This LS460 was in for other repairs when the technician noted coolant residue on the undercarriage. Removing the intake and engine shrouding revealed a coolant leak from the water pump weep hole. Here’s a technician’s view of the leak and residue:
The repair is a fairly straightforward remove and replace of the pump itself. We strong encourage an owner purchase a Toyota/Lexus Genuine water pump, as the part has been revised from earlier models to reduce the likelihood of this issue reoccuring.
A word of caution to anyone working on an LS460 – the fitting from the radiator to the overflow tank at the radiator love to break off when bumped, requiring the entire radiator be replaced. Be careful, these radiators aren’t cheap (and you need an updated hose and clamps to make the redesigned radiator mesh with the existing expansion tank).
