CARspec has seen an increasing amount of leaking rear shock absorbers on 2006-2014 Toyota Rav4 SUVs. While Toyota has replacement criteria outlined for replacing shock absorbers and struts, the majority of Rav4 SUVs that need new rear shock absorbers are completely leaked out and are in obvious need of replacement. Removing Rav4 rear shock absorbers can be deceptively tricky as the upper secured fastener is almost flush with the subframe. Add in a bit of good ol’ Minnesota salty and snowy roads and you’ve got a rusty bolt that takes creative tool use to free.
Toyota has updated the rear shock absorber to help prevent this issue happening again.
