CARspec had the opportunity to repair a nuisance issue for a Sequoia owner recently – a ticking noise out of the engine bay cause by a small crack in the driver’s side exhaust manifold. A fairly common complaint on the 4.7 liter 2UZ-FE in the Tundra, Sequoia, Land Cruiser, 4Runner, GX470 and LX470, a small crack develops where the flange is welded to the first pipe of the manifold. The problem often goes away as the vehicle warms up and the manifold expands. Here’s the hole, less than a centimeter long and only as thick as a piece of paper (a flash light shining through to make it visible):
The repair is to replace the manifold assembly. This is a challenge because the engine mounts need to be removed in order to access the lower securing studs as well as the general rustiness of the bolts. After letting the vehicle idle for half an hour to burn off manufacturing oil the truck was put back into service.
As Eden Prairie and Chanhassen’s independent Toyota and Lexus repair shop, we see this issue often and can quickly diagnose and replace the appropriate manifold, usually the same day. If you’ve got a ticking 4.7 liter V8 call us at (952)426-4798 to make an appointment today!
