A common concern Toyota and Lexus owners in Minnesota complain of is a foul odor from their vehicle upon startup, likened to a wet dog, mold or a damp basement. Toyota and Lexus offer several solutions to this problem, including upgraded cabin air filters and a special cleaning kits for the air conditioning system. First, what causes the smell?
The most common source of odor from the heating and air conditioning is moisture accumulating on the evaporator (removed from the car, above). The evaporator is cooled by the air conditioning system, forming condensation on its fins as it operates, draining out an orifice at the bottom of it’s housing. This is the water you see under your car when you sit with the A/C running. Over time this moisture can lead to a small amount of mold growth and a foul smell as air first passes over it right after you fire up the fans. Toyota and Lexus make a special kit for this cause of odor:
The A/C refresh kit is Toyota and Lexus’s repair for the odor via alcohol-based cleaners, the first step injected under pressure (in the form of a foam) up the drain pipe for the evaporator, filling the evaporator’s fins and housing with alcohol-based foam that cleans and sterilizes whatever it touches, later reverting back to a liquid and draining back out. The second step is a spray, applied to the fresh air intake at the cowl at the base of the windshield, while the vehicle runs with the heat on. This disperses the cleaner through all of the air vents, cleaning and deodorizing them. The alcohol cleaner takes about an hour to dissipate – we don’t recommend driving the car in the meanwhile due to the fumes.
CARspec also recommends replacement of the cabin air filter when a guest has odor issues or to prevent them. The filter is the first line of defense against odors (as it filters incoming air of pollen, dust and the like). We also recommend owners set their A/C to fresh air mode from recirculate before they shut the car off, allowing moisture that would be normally trapped in the system to evaporate through the fresh air opening and vent outside the car. As Eden Prairie and Chanhassen’s Toyota and Lexus specialist repair shop, we hope this helps an owner cure a smelly car and get that “like new” smell back.
I have a 2015 ES 350 with 6900 miles. It developed a moldy AC smell so I took it to Sewell in Dallas. They said it was a known problem and they would fix it. When I picked up my car, it had a funky, used car smell. Kind of sickly sweet. They said they replaced the filter and did an ozone treatment. My car stinks. I took it back and they put in another filter. Still smells. I think it was the ozone treatment. In my opinion, my car is ruined. I would never buy a car that had this smell. I use my car for business and need to transport clients. What should I do?
Marsha,
Because you are well withing your warranty, I’d consider talking to Sewell about this again. We’ve had success with evaporator treatments taking care of moldy smells but I don’t have a lot of experience with an ozone treatments. Lexus (in general, especially at the corporate level) has fantastic customer service and they’ll get this taken care of for you.
Good Luck!
Thank you so much for your reply. This is my 4th Lexus and I have to agree with you about their service. This is the first time I have had a problem. I am two weeks into this issue. We’ll see what can be done this week.
Pursuant to Lexus Air Conditioning & Climate control Course L752; there is NO PERMANENT REPAIR once the evaporator mold problem occurs.
LENON LAW the car & do NOT. continue operating AC if musty odor is present = MVOCS = toxic concentrated Microbial contamination.
I’m having the same issue and would love to know if anyone found a solution.
Jeff,
While we’ve yet to find a permanent solution (ie. a way to never get mold to grow back), we overwhelmingly work on cars that are outside MN’s lemon law coverage, and hence the above recommendation for odor. I’ve yet to have a vehicle treated with the evaporator foam not correct the odor issue, but over the long term it isn’t a permanent fix. You can think of it as you would cleaning your bathroom – you can get it spotless now, but it does take some maintenance to keep it unsmelly. If you’re having odor concerns and are withing your factory warranty for the issue I strongly encourage you to reach out to your local service department and discuss the above with them.
Good luck!
John
John,
Per Toyota Motor Sales: there is no permanent repair. All remedies will last 30-60 days & the occupants, with continued use, will become symptomatic within 6-8 weeks of use. Headaches, rashes, breathing problems, ultimately chronic fatigue & Fibromyalgia- which will be toxic brain damage.
Victims are more widespread in warm states, where AC is more commonly used.
Watch the YouTube link above for more specifics.
Jeff,
We’re in agreement that there is no permanent fix for owners that have this issue, but I can’t comment on your concerns about “Poison Car A/C” like your email alludes to – I’m a car mechanic. Note that CARspec isn’t affiliated with Toyota in any way (we’re an independent shop), so I can’t pass this up the channel, but I encourage you to reach out to Toyota to see what they have to say about this issue.
Good luck!
John
John,
Currently, my dealings with Toyota/Lexus are through the US DOJ, US DOT, and the Court systems.
TMS will never admit the truth to the public voluntarily IMO.
