CARspec had the chance to work on a brand new 2015 Lexus NX200t, featuring the first ever Lexus turbocharged engine in the United States and the first turbocharged engine from Toyota in the USA since the exit of the 2JZ-GTE powered Supra. Because the engine is so new we thought we’d share some cool feature of the engine. From the top the engine looks like a mess:
Hoses. Hoses everywhere. The most unique aspect of the engine, outside of the twin-scroll turbo, is the dual cooling system. The engine has a separate reservoir and lines, while the turbo and liquid-to-air intercooler share another system. The intercooler is on the back of the engine just upstream of the throttle body. The coolant reservoirs are highlighted below:
The intercooler as seen from below:
The engine also has air lines running all over to and from the turbo:
Driving a turbocharged Lexus is a treat and we look forward to seeing more of this engine in the future. While this NX200t was in today only to have it’s snow tires swapped out, it was nevertheless interesting to see.
